Anorexia Nervosa: Symptoms, Cause, Risk Factor Treatment

Anorexia Nervosa is also known as simply anorexia. Its an eating disorder and the person suffering with anorexia having extremely low weight. People suffering with anorexia are very conscious for their weight gain and shape of body.

To prevent weight gain, people suffering with anorexia using lots of effort and restrict food they eat. They use lots of way to decrease calories by vomiting after eating and dieting. They can also do excessively exercise for weight lose. It doesn’t matter how much weight person has lose, he continuously try to lose weight and fear of weight gain.


Like other eating disorder, Anorexia is more dangerous and sometimes it can be very difficult to come our from this. But with better treatment, you can get better idea of who you are and will come to healthier eating habit.

Symptoms of Anorexia:

Symptoms of anorexia nervosa is related to starvation. Its also include emotional issue and patient always thinks about body weight gain or becoming fat. But its very difficult to notice symptoms because reason of low body weight is vary from person to person and some patients not seems extremely thin.

Physical Symptoms

Physical symptoms of anorexia are:

  • Extremely Weight Loss
  • Insomania
  • Dizziness
  • Absence of Menstruation.
  • Yellowish Skin
  •  Hair on Body
  • Irregular Heart Beat
  • Dehydration
  • Swelling on Arms or Legs
  • Fatigue

Some people have similar symptoms like bulimia. But people suffering with anorexia are extremely low weight while bulimia patients are normal weight.

Emotional And Behavioral Symptoms

Behavior and emotional symptoms are like:

  • Avoiding food by dieting or fasting.
  • Excess of Exercise to lose weight.
  • Self induced vomiting to rid out food from body.
  • Avoiding food in public
  • Making excuse for not eating food for full days.
  • Lack of sex interest.
  • Insomania

When To See a Doctor

Most of the affected person don’t want any kind of treatment in early stage. They want to keep themselves thin and very conscious for their health. If you or your loved one has one of the above symptoms or any kind of eating disorder, then you should contact to your doctor as soon as possible.


Exact cause of anorexia is unknown, but study says that some factor of environment, biological and psychological may cause this.

Risk Factors

This is most common in women and girls and its also very common in teenagers also. But still this eating disorder may affect any age group people. But people with more than 40 years are less effected. Teens are at high risk because they are very conscious about their health.


There is not any guaranteed way  to prevent from this eating disorder. If you see any of your friend or family member with this kind of eating disorder, then you should talk with him or her about these issue and you can talk about healthy life. Its true that you are unable to prevent this eating disorder develop, but you can help that person by talking with him or her about healthy life and if condition is critical, then you should take that person to doctor.
