Fibroids : Symptoms, Diagnose, Treatment

Fibroids are a very common tumor find in reproductive system of female. Sometimes this tumor become large in size and it become the reason of severe abdominal pain and heavy menses. But in some cases, there are no sign and symptoms shown. Reason of fibroid is still unknown.

Different Types of Fibroids

Types of Fibroid is depend on the uterus.

Intramural Fibroids

This is the most common Fibroids find in women. It appear in muscular wall of uterus. This may increase in size and stretch your stomach.

Subserosal Fibroids

This type of fibroids found outside of uterus called serosa. It may also increase in size and your womb can see bigger from one side.

Pedunculated Fibroids

Some fibroids grow on stalks and it grow outside from the surface of uterus or inside uterus cavity.

Submucosal Fibroids

This type of tumor form in middle muscle layer of the uterus. This is not a common tumor like others.

What Causes Fibroids?

While its not clear what is the exact cause of fibroids. But there are some facts which may influence their formation


Ovaries produce two hormones name estrogen and progesterone. These hormones help uterine lining to recombine during each menstrual cycle and may be the reason of making fibroids.

Family History

Fibroids may transfer in family. If your mother, grandmother or sister has fibroids history, then you have high chance to be affected.


In Pregnancy, ovaries produce more estrogen and progesterone in your body. So fibroids may increase fastly in pregnancy.

What Are The Symptoms of Fibroids?

Its symptoms are depend on the location, number and size of tumor. Submucosal fibroids is the reason of heavy menses bleeding and you may not conceive easily.


If tumor is small in size and you are near your menopause, then you may not feel any kind of symptoms. Fibroids may decrease during or after menopause. This is because, level of estrogen and progesterone drop down in women during menopause.

Some more symptoms may be include:

  • Blood clots during menstrual period.
  • Pain in lower back.
  • Excess of urination.
  • Pain during intercourse.
  • Period lasts longer than usual.
  • Swelling on abdomen.

How are Fibroids Diagnosed?

A gynecologist can diagnose it in proper way to get pelvic exam. This exam help to check shape, size and condition of uterus. There are some other test which can diagnose


In ultrasound, doctor see the internal structure of uterus and find any presence of fibroids. A transvaginal ultrasound provide best results. In this ultrasound, a wand is inserted into vagina to see the clear image of uterus, because its very close to the uterus during this process.

Pelvic MRI

In pelvic MRI, your doctor can see the picture of uterus, ovaries and other organ of pelvic.


Your doctor will start your treatment based on size of tumor, your age and your overall health.

Home Remedies And Natural Treatments

Some home remedies and natural treatment shows positive response. These are

  • Yoga
  • Massage
  • Acupuncture
  • Use heat for cramp ( Don’t use heat if you have heavy bleeding)

Change in your diet may also shows positive response. Avoid high calories foods and meat. You may eat green vegetables, cold water fish, and drink green tea. Reduce your weight if you are overweight, it will also beneficial for fibroids women.


Doctor may prescribe you medicine which helps to regulate hormones. Leuprolide (Lupron) helps to drop the level of estrogen and progesterone. This medicine eventually stop period and shrink fibroids.
