Osteoporosis- Causes, Symptoms, Treatment & Diet

Osteoporosis can result a painful fracture. Bones in our body are living tissue, and it breaks and creates with new material. Osteoporosis is a condition, in which bones break much faster than it create. It cause bones less dense, porous and brittle. It makes bones weaker and becomes the reason of more fracture.


Causes And Risk Factors of Osteoporosis

People with higher age are at a high risk of osteoporosis. Women has thinner bone than men, so women have higher risk of osteoporosis than men. Estrogen hormones helps to protect it, but women who have their menopause decrease their estrogen level which cause osteoporosis. Some more factors are including:

  • Smoking
  • Medication like steroid, proton pump inhibitor
  • Some disease such as multiple myeloma and rheumatoid arthritis
  • Malnutrition

Osteoporosis Medications

There are some medicine available which help to prevent.


Most common drugs to treat osteoporosis are:

  • Alendronate (Fosamax) : This is an oral medicine people take once in a week.
  • Ibandronate (Boniva):  This is a monthly tablet, or intravenous injection injected four times in a year.
  • Risedronate (Actonel): This tablet available daily, weekly and monthly doses.
  • Zoledronic acid (Reclast): This available in intravenous infusion and you get once in a year or two years.

There are some side effect you may face while using these medicine including acid reflux, nausea and stomach pain. In some rare cases, these medicine may cause jaw osteoporosis. This happen due to overdose of bisphosphonates.


Denosumab  (Xgeva, Prolia) is a good antibody. It helps to slow down bone reabsorption and maintain bone density. This is an injection that you get in twice in a year with the gap of six months. This injection also have side effects including

  • Skin Irritation
  • Pain
  • Fatigue
  • Sweating
  • Muscle Stiffnss

Hormone Therapy

Women who are going through menopause are at a high risk of osteoporosis. Estrogen play a good role to protect bones, and estrogen level decrease during menopause. So in women, hormone therapy is good option as a treatment. Doctor will not recommend you this therapy first, because it increase risk of

  • a Stroke
  • a heart attack
  • breast cancer
  • blood clotting

There are some hormone therapy available including:


This hormone help to make thyroid gland which help to regulate calcium level in body. Doctor use synthetic thyrocalcitonin for treating spinal osteoporosis in that person who are unable to take bisphosphonates. It helps to reduce pain in that people who have spinal fracture. You may get this in the form of nasal spray or injection.

Parathyroid Hormone (PTH)

This hormone helps to control calcium and phosphate level in bone.This drug get as a daily injection in the combination with calcium and vitamin D. This is a very expensive drug given to those people who are not able to take other treatment.

Lifestyle Changes

You have to take excess of calcium and vitamin D in your diet which help in slow bone loss. You may take foods including

  • Dairy Products
  • Soy Products
  • Green Vegetable.

You can drink orange juice with added calcium as well.

Osteoporosis affects lots of people in this world and a permanent cure is not available. Treatment like hormone therapy and medication can help to make bone strong and slow bone loss. You should talk with your doctor about all possible treatment of osteoporosis. You have to know all side effects of all possible treatments.
